Ford Dealers Focus on CNG

Last week in Cranberry Township, Pa., more than 100 representatives from Ford fleet dealerships across the region gathered to learn more about natural gas vehicles from the conversion companies and the businesses that have made CNG a viable alternative to gasoline and diesel. The one-day event played out a lot like an event held in Oklahoma City last year. To kick off the day, there was a brief overview of the fuel and production of natural gas. Chesapeake Energy then offered an overview of its fleet transformation, followed by an exploration of America’s natural gas city and highway infrastructure (check out our map to find stations near you). The day ended with a “ride and drive,” offering attendees a chance to get behind the wheel of CNG versions of several of Ford’s traditional fleet applications. See pictures below.

CNG might not sound as sexy in fleets as it does for consumers, but events like these are vital. Growing use of CNG in fleets generally means more fueling infrastructure available to the public. Fleet managers help raise awareness for the cleaner-burning American fuel among automakers. Most importantly, events like these help acclimate dealers and decision makers to the fuel. Over time, they begin to realize that powering a car or truck on natural gas isn’t all that different from powering it on gasoline or diesel. It’s just much better for the environment and significantly cheaper at the pump, two points that carry significant weight with fleet managers and consumers alike.

Natural gas-powered Ford vehicles have been around for some time  and we can expect the number of them to grow exponentially in the United States throughout the coming years. Have you ever driven one? What’d you think? Hop down to the comments section and let us know about your experience in a Ford NGV.

That's fantastic! I can't wait for more car manufacturers to get on board with natural gas vehicles.

Agreed, this is a great start, but what is the big holdup of offering cars to the public as Honda does.  What is the hold up of creating a viable infrastucture for filling stations.  We need our American Auto makers and our government to get on the stick and push forward with this technology.  NOW>

Progress is being made - lots of progress, actually. Unfortunately, we've just been stuck in a chickenor egg situation. Luckily folks are finally taking initiative and progress is being made.

With Honda being the only personal sedan available with CNG option, there is a lot of room to grow.

I would love to get my hands on the 2013 Ford Fusion with CNG option.  I just don't get what is the hold up with the natural gas as a leading energy source for personal vehicles.  As Americans, we need to get on that technology and make it better.  Provide savings to regular folks and the same time sell the NGVs around the world.  My personal Ford conversion kit story is at newsnibbler.blogspot.com.

I will be getting a Silverado or F150 as soon as they have it as dedicated or bi-fuel. Already have the Civic and I can't wait for the factory trucks to hit the market. This new is great news!

We are excited to offer a number of CNG vehicles from Ford.  Our municipal customer base has been very positive and receptive.
