Oklahoma Company Converts Natural Gas Vehicle No. 2,000

This week, OEM Systems Inc. celebrated its 2,000th natural gas conversion. A woman-owned company based in Okarche, Okla., OEM Systems converted its first vehicle to CNG in 2007. Since then, the company has hired 18 CNG technicians as the demand for natural gas vehicles has climbed exponentially.

The average conversion takes less than 12 hours and costs $10,500 (down nearly 25% from four years ago). OEM’s conversions are used by cities, municipalities and schools across Oklahoma, not to mention early adopters of the world’s cleanest burning alternative fuel. The company will soon expand its clientele to federal agencies making the transition to natural gas-powered vehicles.

Conversion No. 2,000 happened to be a 2012 Chevy Silverado bi-fuel truck with a 21-gallon tank in the back. Oklahoma’s Department of Agriculture is the lucky recipient.

Oklahoma GovernorGov. Mary Fallin presented OEM Systems with a Letter of Commendation for reaching the milestone. Oklahoma, under leadership, recently joined nine other states in a pledge to buy and use more natural gas vehicles.

Here’s a look at OEM’s facility. It’s an impressive shop and likely to pump out thousands more natural gas vehicles in the years to come.

I hope OEM starts doing their installations correctly. They have the monopoly on the market. I hope they follow the NFPA 52 to a T because they are about to be checked regularly. I wonder if they use 304 SS tubing instead of 316 to cut costs, which according to the NFPA 52 is against the law. We will know very shortly.

Looks like some pretty expensive Type 4 cylinders they have there. $$$ I wonder if its really worth it to get Type 4 on those type of work trucks? I have read that even a tiny little chip or scratch on a Type 4 could been subject to removal from service. The type 1 steel CNG cylinders are more durable and ok to "bang around" a little bit, which seems like the best option for a work truck... plus they are about 75% less, right? www.skycng.com Sorry for the plug but they have some good info.

Does anyone know where I, as a consumer, can get my car converted to CNG in Sacramento, CA?

Well, kudos to OEM Systems who is a pioneer to this market. Their quality standards grew ten-fold since they first started. The only down side is they still use Impco gear, which notoriously sucks for performance and reliability. A fuel system supplier that can't barely fix its own components, with fuel calibrations that in the long run are a death sentence to valves and cats. I hope OEM will soo

I hope OEM will soon switch to some more credible supplier, like Landi or other european suppliers.

I just saw a youtube.com conversion to an auto with a small tank. The guy did it himself for $1,000. $10,000 might make sense for a new pickup or full size van, but sounds too high to me. Who really is going to stop someone from doing this himself or with a knowledgeable mechanic?

Natural gas is very clean, abundant and 100% American. My hope is that in the very near future CNG fuel for cars will be a common “available option” for everyone just like automatic and manual transmission is now.

Ron -- these less expensive instalations on non-certified. We always recommend using an EPA- or CARB- certified kit. Email me at chad@cngnow.com if you have questions.

without fail hardships , there is no joy of success. If a person fails before the action was intimidated , he would never have the courage to action and promising targets , and finally to their brewing bitterness of failurebest pregnancy test

Thank you for the sensible critique. Me & my neighbour were preparing to do some research about that. We got a good book on that matter from our local library and most books where not as influensive as your information. reishimushroom.pw
