It's All About CNG Taxicabs

Taxicabs are a big deal for our movement. They travel many miles (typically in the same area) and can recoup the cost of conversion quickly. Moreover, they’re a great way to acclimate the general public to an NGV. We’re not talking about some back-alley spaceship here - NGVs are real and almost identical to the gasoline-powered car you’re already driving.

CNG taxis also encourage better fueling infrastructure and can go a long way towards reducing emissions in a city. They are often part of the smog solution. Coupled with strong fiscal benefits, the last point is the springboard here. It’s the primary reason why we’re hearing so much about CNG taxicabs recently.

CNG cabs come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but when we’re talking about new ones, we’re generally talking about the Ford Transit Connect. It’s still an upfit, but it leaves the factory primed  for just that.

If you follow CNG news at all, you already know that there’s a lot going on with CNG taxis. Here are some of the top stories:

- Earlier this year, Dallas passed a law which allows all CNG Taxi’s to  cut in line at Love Field Airport. Why? Because they’re cleaner and the city is keeping a close eye on smog.

- California Yellow Cab has started receiving CNG taxis. They have 120 on order.

- Taxi Medallion Management of Chicago already has a dozen in service.

- Two cab companies in Connecticut have 70 CNG Transit Connects on order.

- Las Vegas, St. Louis and Philadelphia are all expected to see new CNG taxis in the near future.

- NYC Taxi Commission recently approved the MV-1 and its CNG version.

- Cranberry Taxi Inc. of Pennsylvania recently received $269,000 to purchase 25 new CNG taxis.

CNG taxis are starting to have a presence in every major city. Soon, they’ll be taking over. So next time you hail a cab, try to make it an NGV. Have you ever ridden in one? Take to the comments section and tell us about it.
